temporary exhibition « at the time of the chronometer makers »
From 08.05.2010 to 26.09.2010
This year, the Château des Monts has chosen to present the universe of chronometry in the wake of the first « International Chronometry Contest » of the 21st century, which was organized in 2009 at the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Watch Museum of Le Locle.
Including the 16 wristwatches that were entered for the « International Chronometry Contest », At the time of the Chronometer Makers presents three themes : The long quest for the marine chronometer ; The craftsmen of chronometry ; The observatories and precision timing contests.
The exhibition points out important milestones in the mechanical development of timekeeping that led to a more accurate precision. Special attention is brought to the stakes linked with the contests organized by the astronomical and chronometrical observatories.
At the time of the Chronometer Makers is an open dialogue, a direct link between the past and the present, a testimony to the researches and works of those called « the dignitaries of watchmaking », and, who are all driven by the passion for perfection and precision. The visitor is encouraged to appreciate the high value of an always living tradition, as proven by the success of the chronometry contest organized last year in Le Locle and, of which, a second edition will be held in 2011.
The visitor will discover some 70 marine chronometers, deck-watches, pocket watches, wristwatches and precision clocks belonging to the collections of the Watch Museum of Le Locle, the International Watch Museum of La Chaux-de-Fonds, Girard-Perregaux Villa Marguerite and to private collectors as well as to the contestants of the « International Chronometry Contest 2009 ». Short film sequences complete the exhibition.
